Diagnosis of battery failure

Automotive lead-acid battery capacity will often appear lower self-discharge, excessive consumption of electrolyte and other faults. For these failures, observation can be used to diagnose.
First check the externally. Shell should be no large cracks, no leakage; electrolyte liquid is too low will lead to spillover, but also lead to reduced battery capacity. Surface should be clean, pole for corrosion, the positive lead (FireWire) should be insulated well, or will cause self-discharge phenomenon. There should be no loose joints, grounding should be solid, or increase the output impedance will reduce the output power. Then turn on headlights check. If white light is off, the battery is normal; if dark red, it indicates that power is low.
Then turn the starter. If the starter speed to normal, though slightly dim lighting, but there is still enough light, then a good, charge than the foot; If the starter seems weak, and the light becomes dark, then the battery from over discharge, should be immediately charged; If connected to the starter, the lights dimmed light, and immediately turn off the engine, then the battery discharge has exceeded the limit or plate has a serious curing.

After the initial examination, the electrolyte fluid level should be observed. If necessary, add distilled water. If confirmed the loss of electrolyte, the corresponding density of the electrolyte should be added.

A smart battery charger is designed to increase battery life. Using a smart battery helps in faster, fuller and safer charging.
   
The word "smart" in 'smart battery charger' refers to a microprocessor-controlled charger. This microprocessor helps the to perform complex functions such as letting the user know how much battery charge remains and also the health of the battery. Smart Battery Chargers are mostly used in complex electronic and electrical equipments such as computer notebooks, digital cameras, medical related equipment, etc.
It's interesting to note that smart battery chargers are primarily used with smart batteries and not not with those that simply let the charger know when and 'how much' to charge the battery.

Two important factors related to any are its state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH). Wherein normal batteries fail to communicate with a user about their Soc and SoH, a smart battery is able to communicate both with the charger and the user.
